Help us understand the impact of Social Distancing and isolation on students.
We are using surveys and a smartphone app to help us understand the impact that the pandemic and social distancing are having on our student population at University of Washington. We use the app to show you survey messages that could help us quantify how anxious, stressed or depressed you are feeling during the Spring quarter 2020. The app collects sampled data regarding phone usage, wifi connectivity and change in location. The data that we collect through the app is anonymous and is only used in analysis by our research team as aggregate. We do not collect any data regarding your name, student id or other personally identifiable identifier (PII).
Please participate in our study by installing the app, and complete all the surveys for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card at the end of the quarter.
Step 1. Download AWARE app
Go to iOS app store and download AWARE app
The tool we use to collect our data is a mobile application called AWARE. This app monitors and collects several aspects of students’ phone usage, including:
WiFi network access
Network status (number of messages sent, number of phone calls)
Location information
Screen brightness
Motion
AWARE also tracks the frequency of phone calls and SMS events. This wraparound data collection tool helps us understand how students use their phones. We do not collect any information regarding the content of your messages or calls or app usages. We do not see any information regarding to whom a phone call was made or a message was sent. We are purely interested in knowing whether you have had a social interaction.
AWARE is certified by Apple and is compliant with privacy and security standards of iOS. More information about the AWARE framework can be found here.
Step 2. Join the study by scanning this code.
Launch the AWARE app, go to Settings page of the app, and click on the top right button to scan the above QRS code. That’s all!
